Our Sun May Have Been Bigger Long Ago (SPACE.com)

Standard models predict that our sun was much dimmer in its youth, but devising a way to keep the early Earth from freezing over has not been easy for climate modelers. An alternative solution ? currently being reexamined by a group of researchers ? is to assume our sun started out a bit heftier (and therefore brighter) than expected.

Most stars tend to increase in luminosity as they get older. This is due to their cores becoming denser and thus hotter over time. Assuming our sun has followed this same trend, one can estimate that it was 30 percent fainter 4.5 billion years ago.

"The faint young sun presents us with a paradox, because the predicted temperatures on Earth and Mars would have been too cold for liquid water," said Steinn Sigurdsson of Penn State University.

Too cold for liquid water? Not likely. Evidence in the oldest rocks suggests that Earth had liquid oceans as far back as 4.4 billion years ago. On Mars, scientists have built up a case that it too was warm and wetaround 4 billion years ago. [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]

To avoid the so-called "faint young Sun paradox," scientists over the past 25 years have explored taking the sun off the "standard" evolution curve. By starting off with a smidgen more mass, the early sun would be bright enough to maintain liquid water temperatures on Earth and Mars. The catch is that the sun would need to have had an extremely powerful solar wind to blow off the excess mass and return it to its "normal weight."

Sigurdsson and his colleagues are tackling this problem anew. With funding from the NASA Astrobiology Institute, they will use improved computer models along with the most recent solar data to compare various scenarios, as well as look for possible signatures in the sun that might reveal a "crash diet" in its past.

Greenhouse solution

The young massive sun hypothesis doesn't get a lot of attention these days.

"I think it is a plausible hypothesis, which has not found great favor with the traditional climate science community," said Renu Malhotra of the Lunar Planetary Lab at Arizona State University, who is not involved with the current project. She wonders if others see it as a bit too easy, like cutting the Gordian knot.

When Carl Sagan and George Mullen first identified the faint young sun paradox in 1972, they proposed to solve it by having ammonia, a powerful greenhouse gas, trap heat in the Earth's early atmosphere. But it was later shown that ultraviolet light from the sun would quickly destroy this ammonia.

Most of the current attention is on models that assume the early Earth was blanketed by large quantities of carbon dioxide (as much as 100 times the current levels). However, this doesn't jibe with the geologic record, in which siderite (FeCO3) ? a mineral that forms readily in high CO2 conditions ? is largely absent in the oldest rock samples.

Even if one could find enough greenhouse gases to keep Earth warm, this route doesn't seem plausible for Mars. Being farther from the sun, the Red Planet would need an unfeasibly large greenhouse effect. The amount of carbon dioxide needed, for example, is so high that clouds of CO2 begin to form, reflecting heat away rather than trapping it.

"There's no greenhouse solution for Mars," Sigurdsson said. "But geochemists may not be ready to give it up."

The winds of change

The lack of a clear climate resolution to the paradox leaves the door open for tweaking the initial mass of the sun.

Previous work has found that this "open door" is really just a small window; the increase in solar mass has to be somewhere between 2 and 5 percent. Any less and the Earth won't warm up enough. Any more and the sun evolves into a different star than we know it to be.

Sigurdsson's team is exploring this mass range using a new stellar evolution computer model, called MESA, that is more sophisticated than previous ones. The open source code was developed at the Kavli Institute for Physics by Bill Paxton and collaborators.

Besides the mass, the researchers can adjust other relevant parameters, like the relative concentration of elements that the sun starts off with, as well as the degree of turbulence inside the sun's churning plasma.

"We have a lot more data on the sun now to tighten the constraints on our models," Sigurdsson says.

The tricky part is to have the solar wind slough off the extra mass in just the right amount of time.

If the current solar wind had been constant over the lifetime of the sun, then our star would have lost only about 0.05 percent of its mass. Most scientists believe the solar wind was stronger in the past, but how much stronger is debatable.

To provide enough planet warming without overstepping any solar constraints, the sun had to lose the extra mass in roughly the first few hundred million years, Sigurdsson said. That implies a solar wind that is about 1,000 times faster than what we currently observe.

"You can likely find people that will say it is not feasible, but we need better observations to constrain the models," said S?ren Meibom of Harvard University, who is also not involved with the project.

Strong winds are known to exist around high mass and low mass stars, but medium-sized stars like our sun don't appear to be as windy.

"It is quite challenging to find strong support for [a massive young sun] in astronomical observations of young sun-like stars," Malhotra says. "Young sun-like stars appear to lose mass initially very quickly."

Stellar stretch marks

If the sun did lose a significant amount of mass in its youth, we might expect some telltale sign in solar system data. Some meteorites, for example, show crystal damage that appears to come from a stronger solar wind, but just how much stronger is not yet known.

In 2007, Malhotra and David Minton, who's currently at Purdue University, looked to see if the orbital dynamics of the solar system could hold any signatures of a massive young sun. For instance, the planets would have started out in tighter orbits due to the sun's stronger gravity. But it turns out the difference is probably too small to have left any noticeable traces. According to Malhotra and Minton, the most promising place to look for an orbit-related signature would be in the distribution of irregular satellites, which are moons like Saturn's Phoebe and Jupiter's Himalia that are in distant, inclined orbits. As the sun loses mass, it could increase the efficiency at which planets can capture irregular moons. Malhotra says she plans to study this effect more closely in the future.

The goal of Sigurdsson's project is to look in the sun itself for some leftover changes, or "stretch marks," from an earlier, more massive period. They hope to find something that would be detectable with future helioseismology efforts, which study vibrations generated in the solar interior.

"The core of the sun will hopefully provide us with some sort of sign," Sigurdsson said.

Common foods that result in extra gas and bloating for some menopausal women include: cabbage, eggs, beans, peas, dairy products ? such as milk and cheese. Excess gas might also form in the stomach from eating foods high fats, high sugar foods and drinks, fizzy drinks ? including sodas; and from chewing gum (especially for extended periods of time).

Menopause Bloating Relief

Women might find menopausal bloating relief with the use of various foods and beverages. For example, soy foods can be substituted for dairy products. Hot beverages, teas, soups and broths, are also helpful. Eating small frequent meals will prevent the stomach from being empty for long periods; and will relieve the sensations of feeling stuffed from digesting larger meals.

The stomach and gut have naturally occurring bacteria that aid digestion. These can be destroyed by taking too much of certain medication such as some antibiotics or strong laxatives. Discuss with your doctor before taking any medication (including over-the-counter). Menopause Bloating Exercise

Special exercises can be fun while being helpful in relieving puffy feelings. For example, some Yoga poses, crunches, sit-ups, and stretches have been found to move the gas around and out of the body. A 5-10 minute walk, for instance, will help to move the gas around and out of the body. A deep breathing exercise: 5-10 even breaths have a calming effect, relax the body, and aids expulsion of flatulence.

This simple exercise can also help to minimize flatulence or air in stomach or intestines (if you have no personal or medical conditions that this will affect): Lay flat on stomach, face down, across your bed. Bend your knees 4-6 times. This stretches the abdominal muscles and allows the gas to escape (Consult with your doctor before doing this or any exercise).

Although menopause bloating is fairly common, it is not necessary to suffer discomfort. Moreover, you should not feel puffy everyday. Prevention of feeling bloated might not be totally avoidable. However, the feelings can be minimized when you substitute disagreeable foods for those that are less gas forming; and by trying simple exercises that can be both beneficial and fun.

Despite riots, Greece still safe for most travelers

Riot police faced off against an angry mob on the steps of Parliament, dodging rocks and firebombs. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

Rioting involving up to 80,000 demonstrators in Athens over the weekend undoubtedly is raising concerns among tourists headed to the popular destination, but travel experts say trips to Greece are safe at present.

The most important thing to realize is that the riots, which led to dozens of looted shops and buildings lit afire, have been located in the downtown core, specifically Syntagma Square, said Rich Sorensen, travel news editor for Europe Through the Back Door in Edmonds, Wash.?The riots were touched off by the Greek government?s consideration of tough austerity measures to deal with its ongoing debt crisis. The government approved those measures Monday.

Syntagma Square is bordered by important government buildings, including Parliament, and so it?s a natural magnet for legitimate demonstrators and troublemakers alike, Sorensen said. And that also means it?s a compact area easily avoided by tourists.

?From what I can gather, it?s a fairly typical government unrest situation,? he said. ?Almost anywhere in the world, demonstrations focused at governmental policies are going to be focused at government buildings or a main square. You want to be smart and avoid being enmeshed in that type of situation, but 99 percent of the city is safe and nothing is happening.?

Nikos Papaconstantinou, Greece?s press counselor to the mission to the United Nations in New York City, echoed Sorensen. Reasonable common sense, such as staying away from the main square and the places where buildings have been burned or damaged, is the best precaution, he told msnbc.com.

?They should try to avoid these sad sites,? Papaconstantinou said of tourists. ?There are other things that can be seen, such as the Acropolis. (Visitors) can even go shopping, which is a great welcome to the local merchants. But basically, for people in big hotels, it doesn?t affect their stay, it doesn?t affect their eating in restaurants or going out. It?s all going back to normal very quickly, aside from the buildings damaged because of the fire. The (rest of) the city is intact and quite spectacular.?

All major archeological sites and museums remain unaffected, he said: ?(Visitors) will have a good time,? Papconstantinou said.

The United States embassy in Athens did issue an emergency warning over the weekend, warning ?the situation is unpredictable, and we want to remind U.S. citizens that there exists the continued potential for violence during the demonstrations outside Parliament.? Things were much quieter on Monday, however, and no further warning was issued.

But given the ongoing nature of the economic crisis in Greece, it pays to remain cautious, the U.S. embassy said in the warning: ?Remember, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence without warning. Avoid areas of demonstrations and, if you are within the vicinity of any demonstrations, remain vigilant and exercise caution.?

Beside Syntagma Square, demonstrators frequently congregate around the Polytechnic University area; the Exarchia and Omonia Squares in Athens; and Aristotle Square in Thessaloniki, Greece?s second-largest city, the U.S. State Department warned. University campuses in particular are exploited as refuges by anarchists and those involved in crime, as Greek police are generally prohibited from entering their premises, the state department added.

Sorensen said that the staff at hotels as well as travel guides are invaluable in helping visitors navigate such situations. ?Talk to your hotel people and find out what?s going on, what parts of the city to avoid,? he said. ?Just be smart and talk to people and ask questions. Things like this don?t have to cause your trip to end early or cause you go on a detour. Don?t overreact. The fact is, you can have a wonderful time in Greece right now.?

Why Fall in Love With a (Balanced) Exercise Program ...

There is a lot to love about exercise! Like a trusted friend, you can count on it to always be there to take your frustrations to, and know you will leave feeling better or re-charged and ready to return to living your life, and to keep stretching toward your dreams.

Similar to a good therapy session, exercise can also help you discover the power you have inside, through the choices you make, to consciously melt away any stress or anxiety, to calm your anger, and to regain your composure after an upset ? and to do so in ways that grow, empower and nourish you, emotionally and physically.

In some cases, it?s no exaggeration to say that exercise can work instant wonders, not unlike the refresh button on your computer.

(A word of caution, however: Exercise cannot replace professional therapy in cases of serious personal issues, trauma, addiction, and so on. It can however work miracles on routine or relatively minor stresses ? and in all cases is a?great?partner to therapy, especially essential in dealing with serious issues!)

Falling in love with a regular and balance exercise routine?may be just what you need to energize yourself to live your best life ? and achieve the healthy, trim and fit body you want ? as a bonus!

Of course, you don?t want to fall in love with just any exercise program. Just as you are more likely to have a great couple relationship when you put some thought into the balance of traits you and your partner need to work together more effectively as a team, such as being honest, fun, great listeners, thoughtful in how you treat one another?s views and aspirations, and so on, you also need?an exercise program that is balanced, meaning?it?includes components for building your endurance, strength, and balance and flexibility.

So, why fall in love with your exercise? Let me count the ways! Here is my list of reasons to enjoy your time exercising and to appreciate it is a tried and true lifelong companion:

1. Exercise gives you a natural high!

It helps you to feel better overall, emotionally and mentally. Most all physical exercise, walking, running, cycling, etc., can powerfully boost your mood and sense of well-being. It works by releasing an array of feel-good hormones in the body.

Studies show, for example, that exercise?increases the rate and frequency at which serotonin is naturally released?within the brain and body.?Known as the happy hormone, high levels of serotonin are associated with happiness and low levels with depression.?Serotonin is the hormone that, through exercise, naturally fights depression. Its job is to transmit messages throughout your body that help to regulate your moods, appetite and sleep cycles ? all of which are intricately connected to maintaining a positive emotional-physiological state of mind and body.?Serotonin levels are also influenced by other factors associated with exercise, such as sunlight and nutrition.

Exercise also?decreases stress by lowering cortisol levels and releasing endorphins, the body?s natural pain-killer?into the bloodstream. During exercise, endorphins can produce feelings of euphoria, often known as a ?runner?s high,? a feeling of well-being that runners feels after a long run. These effects are produced by vigorous exercise sustained for a period of time, at least 30 minutes. Even just ten minutes of moderate exercise, however, can improve your overall mood, increase energy and lower fatigue. Exercise is nature?s way of lifting your spirits and flow of energy.

2. Exercise promotes physical health and healing.

The reason you get a natural high from exercise is because the human body is made for movement. You are designed to move as part of staying physically healthy and strong.

Studies find that exercise can actually?stimulate physical healing processes?in the brain and body. Movement is the way the body moves stuck energies and activates its powerful abilities to prevent physical injuries, and to heal wounds as necessary.

Regular exercise, even more than nutrition, is found to boost the body?s natural defense, its immune system. Even low levels of exercise can maintain a healthy immune response. Along with other lifestyle choices, exercise takes advantage of the body?s inner ability to heal itself by stimulating the production of hormones that nourish cells in the body, such as endorphins, and reducing any levels of stress hormones such as cortisol.

Exercise also reduces inflammation and slows down aging?processes that naturally occur.?Endorphins produced by exercise also act like a natural antibiotic that reduces inflammation. In sum, exercise heals, maintains, and protects your body from disease and infections.

In yoga, you mindfully track your inhale and exhale as you focus your attention on moving your body into different positions. All of these practices, in varying degrees, give your body the nourishing benefits of diaphragmatic breathing or deep breathing.

A practice of deep breathing directly affects how you feel. It has a calming, tension-cleansing effect on the mind and body. It increases your ability to focus, and concentrate, and is a great way to regulate anger and reactivity. Several therapy approaches incorporate breathing in dealing with anxiety and panic issues.

Indeed, a practice of deep breathing is vital. It cannot, however, replace vigorous exercise as a critical way your body operates to circulate, and replenish the oxygen supplies to every part of the body.

5. Exercise Builds Your Confidence and Sense of Accomplishment

The gym gives you plenty of opportunities to experience victories, big and small, which can increase your sense of self, mind-body connection, and overall core self?concept and ego-strength.

Every time you do a little bit more, run a little farther, or last a few minutes longer?than you thought you could, you?ve won.

In moments when you want to quit, when every part of your body is shouting in discomfort, and yet you don?t give up, those are the moments that count the most. You build stamina, endurance, and more confidence, knowing you can hang in there.

It?s an empowering mental boost like no other. The little wins build, and keep building, your confidence.

Perhaps even more exciting, what applies to your exercise regimen, applies to every area of your life.?The mental discipline you develop in your workout routines can and does ?transfer? to other areas of your personal life and relationships.

In the past, looking through the classified ads in the local paper is what it means to apply for a job. Creating various job sites online is the advent of the Internet and now it?s easier for someone to apply for work in another state and even in another country.

It has made the world a smaller place with everything at one?s fingertip and just a click away. Opening an account, filling in certain information, and depositing a resume is what most job sites will be required you to do.

In these sites, there are various jobs being offered to people. This will cater to teenagers as well as professionals who want to work full time, part time, or on a per project basis.

Applying online is not only done through job sites. Websites that have a section on careers which one can access and check what openings are available are what a lot of companies have. The only thing you should do is go through the process of also giving certain information that is asked and uploading the resume.

The resume is the first impression that headhunters or employers look at. Given that many people apply, this usually takes these people a short period of time to review and screen certain applicants before going to the next phase of being scheduled and called for an interview.

PSA: Google Wallet vulnerable to 'brute-force' PIN attacks (update: affects rooted devices)

Security hounds over at zvelo have discovered a vulnerability in Google Wallet that means your precious PIN can be "easily revealed." Digging through the app's code and using Google's open resources to reveal its contents, they uncovered a piratical treasure trove of data: unique user IDs, Google account information, and the PIN stored as a SHA256 hex-encoded string. Since this string is known to carry four digits, it only takes a "trivial" brute-force attack involving a maximum of 10,000 calculations to decode it. To prove their point, the researchers made a Wallet Cracker app -- demoed after the break -- that does the job quicker than you can say "unexpected overdraft."

Google has been receptive to these findings, but its attempts at a fix have so far been hampered by the need to coordinate with the banks, since changing the way the PIN is stored could also change which agency is responsible for its security. In the meantime, zvelo advises that there are some measures users can take themselves, aside from putting a protective hand over their pockets: refrain from rooting your phone, enable your lock screen, disable USB debugging, enable Full Disk Encryption and keep your handset up-to-date.

Update: Google has responded by emphasizing that it's only users of rooted devices who are at risk. In a statement to TNW it said: "We strongly encourage people to not install Google Wallet on rooted devices and to always set up a screen lock as an additional layer of security for their phone."

Stock futures edge up as Greece stays in focus (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures edged higher on Wednesday as leaders in Greece again attempted to reach a deal on reforms in exchange for a new bailout.

The recent delays stirred European Union officials to warn Greece that the euro zone could continue without the fiscally troubled nation, which needs a rescue package to avoid an unruly default.

"The anticipation is that they are going to work out the Greek problem one way or the other here. Then we are probably going to have to face Portugal down the road, and we will probably have to face Greece again down the road, depending on how they deal with it," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.

"The issue is, are you going to have a Lehman-type financial crisis, and the market's take on that so far is probably not."

In Europe, shares hit a new six-month high with cyclical stocks extending a strong run as investors became more confident that economic growth would boost company earnings and overshadow Greece concerns. The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up 0.4 percent.

S&P 500 futures rose 1.4 points and were slightly above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures gained 21 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 4.75 points.

Walt Disney Co's quarterly revenue fell short of expectations after a poor showing from the movies unit, but it said late Tuesday profit grew faster than expected as its TV networks and theme parks held strong despite the weak economy. Shares fell 1.4 percent to $40.40 in premarket trade.

Time Warner Inc gained 2.3 percent to $38.99 after reporting better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by its cable networks and the last installment of its Harry Potter movie franchise.

Sprint Nextel Corp shares was up 0.4 percent to $2.46 premarket, losing early gains, after posting its fourth-quarter results.

Visa Inc, due later Wednesday, is expected to come in with a profit of $1.45 per share, up from $1.23 a year ago, helped by a rise in consumer spending in the holiday season.

Other companies due to report include Cisco Systems Inc and News Corp.

Cisco is expected to post a stable quarter, lifted by improving U.S. enterprise demand a year after the network equipment maker issued a weak outlook.

Investors will also eye Groupon Inc, coming with its first results as a public company, to see if the largest daily deal website makes its first quarterly profit. Groupon is expected to report earnings of 3 cents per share on revenue of $475 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

According to Thomson Reuters data through Tuesday morning, of the 301 companies in the S&P 500 posting results, 60 percent topped expectations, tracking below recent quarters at this point of the reporting season.

Asian shares hit their highest level in more than five months as investors kept hopes alive for an agreement on details of a new Greek bailout package.

Shark Tank Contestant Praised By Eric Bolling For Refusing To Outsource Jobs

On Monday?s Fox and Friends, guest host Eric Bolling interviewed entrepreneur Donny McCall, a contestant on the ABC reality show Shark Tank, who was promoting his Invis-A-Rack company and refused suggestions from the investors to off-shore jobs, which would lessen the production costs of his product.

McCall?s pitch initially warmed the heart of Croatian-American investor Robert Herjavec, who bordered on tears as he discussed his immigrant father?s first factory job, but ultimately rejected McCall?s protectionism, saying, ?I can?t support something where you don?t take care of the business, so I?m out.?

?Are you still insistent that the product has to be manufactured here in America?? Bolling asked McCall.

?Oh, absolutely,? McCall replied. ?I won?t waver on that, no.?

Bolling asked if his company would mention that in its advertising.

?Oh, yes, we state that it?s made in the United States and since the airing of the Shark Tank show we?ve had an overwhelming response of people who are in support of it and, you know, are insistent that we stay here, too,? McCall explained, ?It?s high time that somebody stood up and not just bow down to the automatic of going to overseas to do anything.?

Bolling commended McCall for keeping jobs in the country for his product.

?Thanks,? he said, ?for manufacturing that product here in America,?

The Candidates' Take on Nevada Caucus Results (ContributorNetwork)

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney emerged from the Nevada caucus on Saturday with a very safe win not just in delegates, but in every demographic category of Republican voter. Each candidate addressed the Nevada results on Sunday either before a campaign crowd or on national television.

Here's a look at how each of the candidates responded to Saturday's results:

* Mitt Romney. In a victory speech to Nevada voters, Romney took aim at President Barack Obama's record on unemployment. His victory was a foregone conclusion, so Romney used the chance to speak like the eventually nominee: not speaking against his primary opponents, but rather against the sitting president. In anticipation of the Colorado caucus on Tuesday, Romney's campaign website has a video to help people understand how to turn out to vote for him.

* Newt Gingrich. The former House Speaker said he was looking forward to remaining competitive until Super Tuesday, when his native Georgia would surge him in delegate count. Gingrich was on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday morning where he said that Romney had won Nevada four years ago and "He won it this time," Associated Press reported. Gingrich may be dismissive of his loss now, but his campaign web site describes a Nevada victory as "a tipping point for contenders?and victory is vital." Gingrich plans to campaign in Minnesota and Colorado, but will skip Missouri as his name does not appear on the ballot there next week.

* Ron Paul. After working the state for four years, Paul made one last campaign stop in rural Nye County, a Ron Paul stronghold of support and the only county he managed to win on Saturday. It is home to legal brothels, one of which was an outright support of his campaign, National Journal reported. His campaign has focused on winning caucus states, although he has yet to accomplish anything better than third place in the two states thus far. He told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on Sunday that he didn't know when or where he would achieve his first victory, but felt numbers in three or four states "looked pretty good."

* Rick Santorum - The former Pennsylvania senator campaigned in Minnesota on Sunday and said he was confident of doing well there and "Missouri on Tuesday and I think we're also going to do well in Colorado." Associated Press reported he is looking for a good result from Colorado, where Christian evangelicals have a stronghold. His last victory was the Iowa caucus -- news that arrived just one day before the South Carolina primary was held. He placed a distant fourth in the Nevada caucus.
