Assange compares Ecuador Embassy hideout in London to space station

Britain News.Net Sunday 30th September, 2012

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is living in the Ecuador Embassy in London, has compared his one-room to a space station, which has a mattress on the floor and a blue lamp to mimic daylight.

"It's a little bit like being in a space station," he said.

"I have been in solitary confinement [following his arrest in 2010 on the sexual allegations] and this isn't comparable to the difficulties in prison. I have complete control within a small environment and it enables me to do what is most important, which is to protect my work from the attacks it is under," he added.

According to the Daily Mail, the studio room has space for little more than a mattress on the floor, a rickety shelving unit and a small round table with leatherette chairs.

"The first two months in the embassy were quite positive. We had a big political battle, we had momentum, there was the physicality of the training to use emergency equipment and the day-to-day task of building a life in here," Assange said.

"That has stabilised now and the stability is becoming annoying. There is a longer-term danger with all injustices that in continuing they become normalized," he added.

Yet, there is nothing normal about the unique predicament in which he finds himself.

According to the report, the reporter who interviewed him said that he was not permitted to tell the precise nature of the safety equipment Assange keeps close to his bed, nor of the contents of the documents and diagrams pinned to his wall.

Assange has relocated his cyber empire, running it with multiple mobile telephones and laptop computers. He meticulously shreds anything that might leave a paper trail.

"I work a 17-hour day, seven days a week. Sleep is difficult because of the police movements," he added.

"There is an absurdly oppressive police presence, which is not a productive way to deal with the situation. I have a blue sky-light frequency lamp which mimics blue sky shining up to the ceiling. I have to have it on a timer or I am like a battery hen, I stay up all night working,' Assange said and smiled. (ANI)

Shortage of Engineers Is Causing 'Crisis' In Tech Industry
A lack of qualified workers in the tech industry is causing a crisis, says Microsoft. The firm has started lobbying in Washington, calling for a new approach to science, technology, engineering and math teaching at schools, and warning that if changes are not made, the U.S. will lose out to other, better-prepared nations.

The Importance of Recurrent Estate Plan Updates - Temecula ...

[An estate case resulting in a dreaded family feud] underscores why clients should review their estate plans annually because tax laws change. Failing to do this might land families in court and entangle inheritances in litigation.

It is apparent that 2012 is a unique year for planning with the current estate tax and gifting laws. But as the years go by and laws change, are you paying attention to your estate plans and how they could be affected?? Such was the case back in 2010 when there was no estate tax, a very unique situation that some did not plan for.

It just goes to show that changing laws matter, and that your estate plans must change accordingly.

For fresh evidence of the necessity for annual visitation of the estate plan, and for the oddities of 2010, Financial Planner magazine recently published an article titled ?Family Feud: Review Estate Plans Annually.? It?s the case of the family behind Magnolia Audio Visual, and the couple that sold its retail rights to Best Buy and accumulated a cool $100 million estate in the process. Unfortunately, the parents weren?t as savvy with their estate planning.

The estate plan provided that the maximum amount allowable under the federal estate tax threshold would be passed down to the children, with the rest to pass to the surviving spouse to thereby avoid immediate estate taxation. Unfortunately, the plan didn?t account for the fact that 2010 didn?t have an estate tax (thanks to expiring Bush-era laws and a gridlocked Congress).

The wife died. When the husband nevertheless claimed the estate that was to pass to the children under the estate tax planning, the children were noticeably irked. It seems they had been passed over and were in danger of losing a fortune afforded under the once-in-a-lifetime and quite unintended tax loophole. Accordingly, the children filed suit against their father on the grounds of ?non-compliance, forgery and the use of undue influence.?

This case serves as a lesson to all that we should frequently update our estate plans to ensure our wishes are carried through to our loved ones.

HK tycoon offers $65M dowry for gay daughter

HONG KONG (AP) ? The daughter of a flamboyant Hong Kong tycoon who has offered $65 million to any man who can woo her away from her lesbian partner said she's not upset with her father. Still, it's unlikely she will be accepting any of the marriage proposals flooding in.

Cecil Chao made world headlines this week when he offered the 500 million Hong Kong dollar marriage bounty after learning that his daughter, Gigi Chao, had eloped with her partner to France.

"I'm actually on very, very loving terms with my father. We speak on a daily basis. He just has a very interesting way of expressing his fatherly love," the 33-year-old told The Associated Press.

She said her father offered the reward because he was upset after learning she had "a church blessing in Paris" with her girlfriend of the past several years.

"What this whole episode really highlights is that perhaps still, the Chinese ? or in fact the Hong Kong mentality ? can perhaps tolerate the 'don't ask, don't tell' view of sexuality," she said. "But as a social statement, it's still very much a sensitive issue."

Hong Kong decriminalized homosexuality in 1991, but it does not legally recognize same-sex marriage.

Cecil Chao is the chairman of Hong Kong property developer Cheuk Nang Holdings and has a reputation for being a playboy. He once claimed to have had 10,000 girlfriends but has never married. He's also known for his love of Rolls-Royces and for being a qualified helicopter pilot, a skill he shares with Gigi Chao, one of his three children by three different women.

Cecil Chao said Friday in a separate interview with the AP that reports that his daughter had married were just rumors. He added that he has received hundreds of offers from suitors since he made the offer and his daughter has probably had thousands.

"I was very surprised about the reaction from around the world," said the 76-year-old tycoon, sporting gold mirrored sunglasses and a sport jacket over an unbuttoned polo shirt. "Thousands of people writing to say they want to be my in-laws."

He said he's offering the money because he wants to make sure his daughter has a comfortable life in Hong Kong, which he believes will require a house worth HK$150 million ($19 million). The rest of the money can be used for investments, he said.

"Living a comfortable life in Hong Kong, not super-luxury, takes HK$500 million," he said.

When asked whether she would accept an eligible suitor, Gigi Chao laughed off the question, saying, "We'll just worry about that when the time comes."

Regular Home Improvements For Every Home | EzinePR

Use a flexible container to mix up just enough dry plaster of Paris for your intended use. When you are finished with the job all you have to do is allow the remainder of the plaster to harden, turn the container upside down over a trash can, and flex the sides. The plaster will cleanly separate from the container and you can put the container away to use on the next job.

If a squeaky faucet is driving you crazy, chances are you can use this trick to fix the problem: After taking the handle off, detach the faucet stern and apply a thin coating of commercial lubricant to each pair of threads. After you have reassembled it, the faucet should turn on and off smoothly and squeak-free.

If you are hiring a contractor or landscaper to work on your home improvement project, make sure that they are licensed. If a contractor has a license, it means that they are a legitimate businessman who is skilled in the type of work you require. It also indicates that the contractor follows and is informed about the latest updates in the industry.

Updated homes typically sell faster and for a greater amount of money than those that have had little or no renovations. Updating dark and dated kitchens is by far the best thing that you can do to improve the value of your home. It also is the most sure way to get back the most of your investment.

Newly updated and modern houses sell faster than outdated houses. The biggest thing that people look for in a house is the kitchen. If your kitchen is dark, drab, and outdated, then you should considered doing renovations. Kitchens are a great place to start when trying to improve your home.

There are a few electrical tasks that a non-expert can do around the home. One is replacing a light switch. After you turn off the electricity and remove the cover plate, detach the wires on the old switch and replace them in the same order on the new switch.

One of the biggest causes of failure in a DIY home improvement project is to start more than one project at a time. When you focus your efforts on one area, you end up with better results and a better success rate of finishing your project. Also, you have more usable space while renovating if only one area of the home is in progress at one time.

To seal your home against pesky drafts and keep your warmed or cooled air inside, pick up some foam insulators for outlets and light switches located on exterior walls, especially those on the north side of your home. These inexpensive insulators can save you money on your energy bills and are extremely simple to install.

No matter what your budget is for renovations, plan for 25% more than you?re planning to spend. This will give you wiggle room for unexpected expenses, upgrades, and replacement parts or items. You never know what?s going to happen, but having enough money to cover any problems will give you peace of mind.

When you are making improvements to your home, don?t be afraid to ask for help as soon as you can. The sooner you ask for help, the sooner you can get assistance with your home renovation project. If you wait too long and ask for assistance in the middle of a home renovation project, you may not get the help you need when you need it.

Ceiling fan installation is a fantastic and cost effective home improvement project that you should consider. Ceiling fans are great for circulating the air in the home, and keeping the home cool. They can also help reduce the cost of your electric bills by eliminating the need for air conditioning during the cooler days of the summer.

Don?t overlook the addition of storage space to your new or existing home. Most homes are substantially lacking in storage space. Add built in bookshelves to the living room or dining room. Turn a broom closet near the kitchen into a food pantry. Small changes and additions will really add up.

If you are going to be changing plumbing, such as a sink or pipe, always give yourself extra time in case you need it. If you plan for extra time, you will have backup plans for if you are not able to use the plumbing for longer than expected. You do not want to have to go for extra time without a plan on how to use the water.

Before you begin your next home improvement project, think about how long you would like to stay in your home. If you are planning to move this year, you may have a different budget for improvements than if you were staying for awhile. You would also want to focus on areas in the home, like the kitchen and bathrooms, that buyers think are most important.

Do you now understand what makes home improvement, well, home improvement? Do you know about the different kinds of jobs and equipment now? If you now have an idea of how to answer these questions, then you have read and understand what it takes to create the home of your dreams.

AT&T 4G LTE adds Galaxy Note 2, Galay Tab 2 101, Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro

Of the four big US carriers, AT&T's always been a solid go-to for variety across its wireless product portfolio. And today, the operator's welcoming a gaggle of Android devices from Samsung to bolster its 4G LTE offerings. Headlining this galactic quartet is the Galaxy Note II, the company's 5.5-inch phablet sequel which, though previously announced, has yet to receive a solid ship date. Also sharing that spotlight is an actual tablet, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and two new smartphones: the Galaxy Express and Galaxy Rugby Pro. While that latter handset is a mere update to the rugged, water-, shock- and dust-proof OG Rugby Smart, the Express is a 4.5-inch ICS device that reps a dual-core 1.5GHz CPU and considerable 2,000mAh battery. All are said to be arriving within the "coming months" which, in non-PR garble, should translate to a pre-holiday release. Check out the official presser after the break.

Chael Sonnen didn?t show at Anderson Silva?s barbecue

Remember how before Anderson Silva beat Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, Sonnen said he wanted Silva's wife to make him a steak, and then after the fight, Silva invited Sonnen to a a barbecue? Well, the barbecue happened, but Sonnen didn't show.

Silva says it wasn't just some hamburgers on the grill affair, but a true Brazilian gaucho barbecue. Sonnen now has his sights on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and he's forgotten all about his pal Andy.

Thanks, Fightlinker.

A's?rough up?Rangers, trail by only 3 games

By STEPHEN HAWKINS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:18 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2012

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Oakland Athletics may be able to do better than just get into the playoffs as a wild card.

They might sneak away with a division title if they keep playing like this against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.

Oakland led for good only three batters into the game and chased Texas starter Martin Perez before the end of the first inning in a 9-3 victory Wednesday night to pull within three games with seven to play, four against the Rangers.

"To come out there and get these guys was the biggest series of the road trip. These are the guys we are trying to catch," Josh Reddick said. "A lot of people want to say we can get the wild card. We're trying to still win this division. ... It's definitely possible."

The Athletics (88-67) have taken two of the first three games in the series that ends with a day game Thursday. That will also wrap up a stretch of six series in six cities before ending the regular season with six games at home.

"We lost a tough one the first night (in Texas). For me, it was even more important to come back and win the next day and follow it up with a good performance today," manager Bob Melvin said. "Certainly it would be nice to win tomorrow, but at this point, these two games I think were big for us."

The Los Angeles Angels (86-69) remained within two games of Oakland for the AL's second wild card spot by winning their fifth game in a row later Wednesday night, 4-3 over Seattle.

Oakland, which had played five consecutive one-run games, led 5-0 only eight batters into the game. The A's chased Perez (1-3) before the rookie left-hander got all the way through the batting order one time.

Yoenis Cespedes had one of Oakland's two triples in the first inning.

After Cespedes' one-out triple, the A's had three consecutive singles. The last was Josh Donaldson's grounder up the middle that then rolled under the glove of center fielder Josh Hamilton for a two-base error, making it 4-0. Derek Norris tripled to left-center on a liner Hamilton appeared to misplay and let get over his head.

While not the best timing for the Rangers (91-64) to play a game like this, Hamilton said they're not panicking.

"It is what it is," Hamilton said. "I'm not going to give in or put my head down or start crying or collapse all over myself, and the team's not going to do that either. Come back tomorrow."

The magic number remained at five for the two-time defending American League champion Rangers, who host the Angels for three games this weekend.

Matt Harrison (17-10), the All-Star left-hander, starts for Texas in the series finale against Oakland, when he will try to become the Rangers' first 18-game winner since Kenny Rogers in 2004. He faces lefty Travis Blackley (5-3).

"If we come back tomorrow and win the ballgame, they leave out of here the same way they came in," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We feel like we're going to win tomorrow. We just didn't get it done tonight."

Stephen Drew had four of Oakland's 16 hits, including a double leading off the game before scoring on Cespedes' triple into the right-center gap.

The only Oakland starter without a hit was No. 9 hitter Cliff Pennington. Even Reddick ended a career-long 0-for-30 slump with singles in the seventh and ninth innings.

Rookie righty Jarrod Parker (12-8) won his third consecutive decision over four starts. He struck out eight in six innings, and his 109 pitches were his most since 111 on June 4, when he threw eight scoreless innings and allowed only one hit against the Rangers in Oakland.

The Athletics set an AL record for striking out the most in a season with their 11 against six Texas pitchers. They have 1,333, nine more than Tampa Bay had in 2007, and they still have seven games left.

"Despite that number, we're having a great year and winning some ballgames," Reddick said. "Just kind of throw that stat out the window as long as scoring runs."

A night after Yu Darvish was scratched from his scheduled start because of neck stiffness, and Scott Feldman and five other relievers were needed in a 10-inning loss, the Rangers were already back in their bullpen before the end of the first inning.

Wilmer Font, the third Texas pitcher, walked the only two batters he faced to start the third before Drew's two-run single made it 7-3. Moss doubled and scored on a single by Norris an inning later.

Parker walked leadoff hitter Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus doubled off the left-center field wall. Michael Young and David Murphy had consecutive singles to start the second, scoring on a fielder's choice grounder by Mitch Moreland and a sacrifice fly by Andrus that made it 5-3.

Chris Carter's strikeout in the second inning was the third of the game for the A's, and pushed them past the 2007 Rays. Oakland already is well past its previous franchise mark of 1,226 strikeouts in 2008.

"At this point, it just kind of goes with the territory," Melvin said. "At least we're not hitting into double plays."

NOTES: Oakland is 51-25 since the start of July, the best record in the majors over that span. ... The A's are 8-7 against Texas this season. ... The start by Perez was the shortest for a Ranger since July 2, 2011, when Derek Holland also got only two outs facing eight batters against Florida. ... Perez got his first major league victory on June 30, against the A's at Rangers Ballpark. ... Yoshinori Tateyama struck out four in 2 1-3 innings, and was the only Rangers pitcher who didn't allow a base runner.

When you paint interior rooms during a home improvement project, allow extra drying time if your house is new. Newer homes are usually built with extremely effective (nearly air-tight) separation between the interior and exterior. While this is an advantage for you as a homeowner in most situations, when you paint inside, your paint will take longer to dry than the paint manufacturer might claim.

Here is a home improvement for working with contractors! If you are having work done, be sure to inform the head of the crew if you are not happy! In the ideal world, everyone would understand and do exactly what you want, the way you want it done! If that is not the case, speak to the head of the crew! You are paying the bills, and you are in charge. If you aren?t happy, speak up. If things don?t work out with that contractor, there are lots of others to choose from.

Dirty ceiling vents can make your home look bad. You can purchase and install new ceiling vents, giving your home a cleaner and neater look.

If you are doing any home improvements on the roof of your home, make sure you wear the proper shoes so that you keep yourself safe. Many accidents in home improvements happen from people falling off their roofs. Be careful up there by wearing the right shoes and tie yourself off whenever possible.

When wanting to make a living out of home improvement, it is important that you have great people skills. If you do not have great people skills, when dealing with your clients it is very likely that you would lose quite a few jobs. It is better to be a people person, and make the money you want!

Begin the installation of your new kitchen cabinets by drawing a horizontal benchmark line around the perimeter of your entire kitchen. This level line will provide a reference point for you to measure from when installing your wall and base cabinets. Your benchmark line should begin at the highest point of your floor.

New wallpaper can transform a room. Before you add wallpaper, you need to find out what type of wall is under the existing wallpaper. Usually walls are either drywall or plaster smoothed over lath. You can figure out what kind of wall you are dealing with by feeling the wall, plaster is harder, smoother, and colder than drywall. You can also try tapping the wall, drywall sounds hollow while plaster does not.

Smoke detectors are required for safety in your home. Many homes only put them in certain areas. You can increase the safety in your home, by installing additional detectors in places like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. These areas can sometimes be overlooked, though prone to fires as much or more than the rest of the house.

Soak your hands in salad oil after completing an oil painting job. The oil will help release the paint from where it has splattered on your hands. Salad oil smells better and is a lot safer than the typical cleanup choices of mineral spirits or kerosene.

When getting ready to prime a room that is going to be painted, have your primer tinted so that it is the same color as the paint you are using. The primer will still do its job, but instead of needing three coats of paint, your walls will require only two.

Removing wall paper is something that may sound easy, but it actually takes some skill. You need to know what type of wallpaper you need to remove, and what type of wall you have. Based on the wallpaper you have, you then either need to dry-strip it or soak it and scrape it off. Make sure you do your research to determine what needs be done.

In summary, there are some obvious ideas that have been tested over time, as well as some newer techniques that you may not have considered. Hopefully, as long as you follow what we suggest in this article, you can either get started with your home improvement project or improve on what you have already done.

National GOP?s redistricting gurus paint Texas? mapmakers as blundering know-it-alls

Texas GOP legislative leaders blew off advice from some of their national party?s?redistricting experts and went for broke in their congressional remap last year, producing ?chaos? and denying the state a chance to slow the Mitt Romney bandwagon in March?s super Tuesday presidential primary, according to a published report.

Texan Robert Draper, writing in The Atlantic magazine, quotes Washington-based, Republican?redistricting consultant Tom Hofeller as saying that until the next census is taken in 2020, the Lone Star state will provide a cautionary tale of how a remap effort can go wrong.

?The new horror story, he?s decided, will be Texas, which stood, this past cycle,?as a powerful example of how reckless a redistricting process can become,? Draper writes, speaking of Hofeller.

Draper notes that the state GOP?s ?mangled effort? to extract a net gain of four Republican U.S. House seats ? and? to yield not a single new one to Hispanics and blacks who fueled Texas? population growth ? triggered an ?entirely predictable consequence? that Hofeller and other Washington Republicans warned of:?The new congressional and legislative maps have ricocheted between three federal courts,?which delayed the state?s GOP primary until late May, long after conservatives Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, one of whom probably would have carried Texas,?had conceded defeat to Romney.

Draper quotes an unnamed GOP legislative leader as saying Hofeller and Republican National Committee counsel Dale Oldham ?created an adversarial relationship? and ?rubbed raw? the Legislature?s bigwigs.

Texas instead used inexperienced staff and legislative point men, Draper says.

U.S. Rep. Lynn?Westmoreland, R-Ga., described on his website?as the House GOP campaign committee?s vice chair overseeing congressional remapping efforts for this cycle, told Draper the state?s legislative leaders solicited no advice

?Well, the Texas Legislature basically told me,??We?re Texas, and we?re gonna handle our maps,?? Westmoreland said. ?You know, I?m just saying that when you have a population increase of 4 million, and the majority of that is minority, you?d better take that into consideration.?

Actually, it was excluded from view. And the courts insisted on drawing a new minority-dominated congressional district in Dallas-Fort Worth, which Democratic state Rep. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth is likely to capture in November.

Draper?s piece also describes blow-back from tea party types?who?ve protested?U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess? vote for last summer?s debt-ceiling deal. The Denton County Republican ?dipped his toe in the moderate waters,? Draper says. And it has vivid illustrations of such redistricting gems as the ?Glock Pistol,? the 27th Congressional District centered on Corpus Christi, and the ?Bottle Opener,? the 23rd District in far West Texas, which may be the only one of the state?s 32 U.S. House seats that?s in a true swing district.

Builders aim for super-energy-efficient homes

Crowned with three gables and painted in hues of gray and white, the suburban home in Lake Forest doesn't look much like the domicile of the future.

But as summer heat radiates off the fresh asphalt outside, the home runs comfortably at full tilt indoors. Recessed lights shine, radios blare and air-conditioned splendor greets hot skin. Despite all systems going, the property is producing more electricity than it can consume on a warm summer day ? and that's the goal.

Unveiled late last year, the ZeroHouse model by Los Angeles builder KB Home embodies the industry's bid to move beyond the one-of-a-kind vanity project and make subdivision building a green practice. Net-zero homes such as the one KB Home has built are highly efficient properties paired with renewable energy technology such as solar panel systems, resulting in homes so green they produce at least as much juice as they consume.

California has had expansive policies mandating and incentivizing the development of greener new homes for years, but the implementation of those goals has been slowed by the weak housing market and the dearth of new construction.

With the market healing, and with builders trying to distinguish their products from homes they built as recently as six years ago, companies such as KB Home, Lennar Corp. and others are rolling out more options for consumers and increasingly making energy efficiency part of the basic package.

"For new homes, it is becoming more of a standard feature, and the reason is that builders need a compelling reason that somebody should buy a new home rather than a resale," said Patrick Duffy, principal for research firm MetroIntelligence Real Estate Advisors.

In coming years, California guidelines will call for ever more energy-efficient homes, with the goal of having all homes built in 2020 being net zero. For now, net zero remains more of an aspiration for the industry, though experts say builders are increasingly making standard some of the fundamental elements of green design, including more efficient appliances, lighting and solar panel systems.

In Southern California, KB Home has made solar systems standard. Lennar, Pulte Homes and Pardee Homes offer solar home projects. ABC Green Home of Newport Beach will be building a net-zero home to showcase green technology for consumers. Clarum Homes in Palo Alto is a custom builder that has gained praise for incorporating energy efficiency and passive solar features into homes with modernist flourishes.

Moving to Southern California from Maryland, Ray and Linda Frilot wanted to buy a new home because the resales needed too much work, from $20,000 to $50,000 worth of remodeling. They were attracted to the solar offerings at KB Home's Fox Hollow at the Crown Valley Village development in Murrieta, said Ray Frilot, a retired government worker and former military man.

Aside from a 2.25-kilowatt solar system, the home has a tankless hot water heater, some LED lighting and Energy Star appliances. Although the home wasn't advertised as a net-zero property when they bought it, he and his wife conserve so much energy from habits picked up while living in Germany that the electricity bill from Southern California Edison Co. is close to zero.

"The energy that I don't use Edison buys from me," he said. "It looks like I may not have an electric bill next year, because the electricity, all of it is going to keep on adding to that credit. I still have to pay delivery and handling charges, but that is just a couple of bucks a month."

Net-zero homes couldn't exist without this type of subsidization, called net metering. Net-zero homeowners rely on power from utilities at night but get credit for the energy they produce during the day that they don't consume.

Net metering allows homeowners to get credit for the power they produce at a retail rate rather than a wholesale rate. There is currently a cap on net metering programs for that reason. Although the cap won't be hit any time soon, experts said, the future of net metering is uncertain.

Environmentalists began pushing for California to mandate that new homes come with renewable energy systems in the early 2000s, as the technology became more scalable and available.

The effort to get builders to build green morphed into state law SB 1, which focused on incentives and created the Million Solar Roofs Initiative, calling for the creation of 3,000 megawatts of new, solar-generated electricity by 2016.

Gov. Jerry Brown has increased that goal to 12,000 megawatts, or roughly the equivalent of 12 nuclear power plants, according to the group Environment California. A thousand megawatts of solar energy could power about 250,000 homes.

Also created as part of the law was the California Solar Initiative, which uses rebates to promote renewable energy use in previously owned homes, as well as commercial, agricultural, government and nonprofit buildings. The similar New Solar Homes Partnership targets new houses.

"Unfortunately, as soon as the bill was passed, we had the housing market collapse, so everything stopped," said Bernadette Del Chiaro, director of clean energy and global warming programs at Environment California. "As the housing market ticks back up again, I would expect solar to pick back up again."

In 2008, California energy regulators adopted a long-term plan that called for having all new residential buildings achieve zero net energy use by 2020 and having all commercial buildings achieve zero net energy use by 2030.

PFT: Ex-NFL ref says replacements doing 'good job'

Chandler Jones, Kevin KolbAP

We mentioned earlier in the week this was a big weekend for the Jones family, as?Jon defends his UFC light heavyweight belt tonight, while Chandler and Arthur face off in tomorrow night?s Patriots-Ravens game.

But the struggles they?ve faced throughout life, and continue to, makes their story about more than an athletic coincidence.

?All of this hasn?t dawned on me yet,? Jon Jones told Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com about his family?s success. ?We?re all still at the very young stages of our careers. I have this thing where I?m really big against complacency, so I don?t want accept the attitude like, ?We did it!? because we haven?t done it yet. Things could go wrong. You?re on top of the world one year and the next you?re borrowing money.

?I think there?s much more to come, but I am really happy for my parents. They can look at this being a success story at this point.?

Arthur II and Camille Jones? boys have made names for themselves, after struggling through tragedies in their younger years, and fighting to make things easier for their parents.

Their oldest sister Carmen died of brain cancer at age 18, and all helped with her care during her struggle.

Now, they?re paying back their mother for the years she looked after them.

Camille Jones has lost almost all her sight because of complications of diabetes. She?s also on dialysis and awaits a kidney transplant.

Chandler?s paying for her medical insurance, while Jon?s hired a nurse and a chef to help their parents, who moved them out of a rough neighborhood to the small town of Endicott, N.Y. as children. ?I remember my dad telling our family we were going so we could have a better life,? Jon said.

Their parents will be in Toronto for Jon?s fight tonight, then head to Baltimore to see the other two. And for all they?ve been through, they try to keep things in perspective.

?Life hasn?t changed that much,? Arthur Jones II said. ?People at the church are very happy for me, but there?s no big brouhaha of, ?That?s Mr. Jones. He?s a famous dad.?

With Jon one of the top fighters in the world, and Chandler emerging as a contributor for the Patriots as a first-round pick, that could be changing, soon.

But as impressive is the way the family has banded together for each other.

NZ Post Boosts Online Retail Service | Stuff.co.nz

New Zealand Post plans to extend its YouShop internet shopping delivery service so Kiwis can easily buy from online retailers based in Europe, Asia and Australia as well as in the United States.

The move is another blow to traditional shop owners, many of whom argue they are unfairly disadvantaged because most purchases under $400 made through overseas websites are GST and duty-free.

YouShop, unveiled earlier this month, lets Kiwi shoppers buy from US online stores that either won't deliver to New Zealand or have high shipping charges. Shoppers ask for purchases to be delivered to an address in the US, from which NZ Post forwards them to their home.

The service is being provided through a partnership with Singapore Post which runs the warehouse in Oregon used for deliveries.

NZ Post spokesman John Tulloch said Singapore Post had delivery centres in other major markets and NZ Post planned to extend YouShop to support purchases from "several other countries".

It had not intended to market YouShop till next year, but Tulloch said interest had been high since its existence was reported by BusinessDay.

Some customers were frustrated that some US online stores did not accept overseas credit cards, but Tulloch said there was a possible solution for that as well.

In addition to forwarding purchases, Singapore Post also acts as a payment intermediary, through which consumers can buy from sites that have such restrictions.

"They pay the vendor. We haven't got that functionality yet and it is not something in the current plan". But NZ Post might look at it, he said.

Retailers Association spokeswoman Louise Evans McDonald said it wanted the tax-free threshold reduced or eliminated but would not criticise NZ Post for capitalising on the overseas e-shopping trend. "If they weren't doing it, somebody else would be," she said.

US air freight company i-parcel, which runs a competing forwarding service called Prezoom from a warehouse in Delaware, said it would also extend that service "imminently" so New Zealanders would be able to have purchases sent on from a delivery address in Britain.

YouShop charges $23 to forward a 500 gram package from the US.? Prezoom charges $19.50, although a Taranaki shopper said patrons should be aware it could charge more for large, light items, after he was surprised by a $28.50 bill for delivery of a 200 gram lightbulb.

Prezoom launched its forwarding service early in September and said last week that 800 New Zealanders had registered within a week.

Egypt jihadi groups say behind deadly Israeli border attack

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - An Islamist militant group based in Egypt's Sinai has claimed responsibility for a cross-border attack that killed an Israeli soldier in the restive peninsula where jihadi groups have gained a foothold.

Three gunmen were also killed in Friday's attack, which the group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes said was in response to an anti-Islam film that has sparked worldwide protests and violence. A second Israeli soldier was wounded in the attack.

There have been at least four such cross-border raids in just over a year in the area where security lapsed after the uprising that overthrew Hosni Mubarak last year.

Egypt's army and police launched a security sweep after a raid that killed 16 Egyptian border guards in August.

In a statement on an Internet site often used by jihadi groups, Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes said it had named the operation as an "attack to discipline those insulting the beloved Prophet", a reference to the film that mocked Prophet Mohammad.

The group accused Jews of involvement in the film, but did not explain how. Though the film was made in the United States, Israel is often viewed by militants as a proxy agent for U.S. policy in the region because it is a close ally of Washington.

CNN reported that Jewish groups denied some reported allegations that there was any Jewish backing for the film.

The U.S. government has condemned the film and said it had no role in it, but said it could not act against the production because of its commitment to freedom of expression.

Many Muslims view any portrayal of the Prophet as blasphemous.

Ansar Bayt al-Maqdes, which means "supporters of the holy place", a reference to Jerusalem, pledged to carry out another operation, at an unspecified time, in revenge for what it said was the killing of a member in Sinai with the help of Israel.

It was not immediately clear what help it believed Israel had given in the death of Ibrahim Oweidah. Egyptian authorities had said his death in September was due to a landmine accident.

The group has previously claimed an attack on a pipeline delivering gas to Israel and rocket attacks targeting Israel.

Another Christian College Files Suit Against Contraceptive Mandate

The College of the Ozarks, a small Christian college in Point Lookout, Mo., has filed suit against the federal government over the mandate requiring employers to provide health insurance coverage for contraceptive and abortifacient drugs, WORLD News Serivce reports. The College of the Ozarks is the 14th school to challenge the mandate in court. "The so-called Affordable Care Act is government at its worst," said school president Jerry C. Davis in a statement. "This is not a partisan issue. It is a constitutional issue, and the College wants its rights respected and enforced, instead of being trampled upon. The Constitution still matters." Although the College of the Ozarks qualifies for a one-year exemption to the mandate, which went into effect Aug. 1, the delay only postpones the inevitable, Davis said. Like other small schools, College of the Ozarks has seen insurance costs skyrocket under the health care reforms. Rising premiums might force the school to make a substantive change to its insurance plan, which would end its eligibility for the exemption, he said. According to The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a legal group representing several schools, institutions and companies fighting the mandate, 29 challenges are pending in courts around the country.

iOS 6 gets it jailbreak already, but only on older A4powered iPhones and iPods

iOS 6 probably won't go down in history as a revolutionary update, but fortunately it's anti-tamper measures don't seem to have changed much either. The iPhone Dev-Team has already managed to get its redsn0w tethered jailbreak working, at least for the A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS and 4th-gen iPod touch, and you'll find full instructions as well as a healthy list of caveats at the source link below. As to how long it'll take to get some Cydia action on the iPhone 5 and other fresher devices and without the hassle of tethering, place your bets here.

Tips For Understanding Home Improvement In Today's World ...

If you are suffering the wrath of owning a small bedroom, you can create an optical illusion making it seem larger than it is. Repainting your room in light green or blue can create a feeling of more ?space?. You can also incorporate colors such as off white or beige, but they won?t feel as comfortable or warm as the other colors would.

Always use gloves, glasses, and earphones when completing a home improvement project. Even small projects can give off dust and debris that might harm your eyes, create loud noises that are dangerous to your ear drums, and require chemicals that are not safe for your skin. Taking a few safety steps may seem silly for a small project, but you will thank yourself when no harm comes your way.

Burst the bubble in your newly applied vinyl floor covering then patch it! Vinyl floor covering will bubble up for a number of reasons. One way to fix it when it has just been applied to the floor is to pierce the bubble with a needle, let the air escape, and weight it down until it dries.

Treat your wall to a dolly! No, not to a child?s toy but to a specially made anchor and toggle bolt! The shank of a dolly expands when you screw it tight. It can be used to hold a picture or other light object in place on the surface of a hollow wall where there is no underlying stud to nail to.

Focus on interior lighting for your next home improvement project. If you change out your old light bulbs with Compact Fluorescent Lights, you will save energy and money. These bulbs also last longer than traditional lighting choices. This is a very simple project that will have remarkable results on the amount of money you save in energy bills.

Buy any home improvement supplies you need in bulk to get larger savings. Ensure that you store your supplies in a cool, dry place where they won?t be damaged so that they will last the length of your project. If you have any neighbors also doing work, consider asking them to go in on a bulk order with you so you both can save.

If you have furniture that is dull, faded, or even peeling its original paint or finish, don?t dump it. Stripping off whatever finish was on the furniture will give you a clean slate to refinish it however you would like.

When making a major renovation to your home, check into what kind of return for investment that you can get from it. The reason for this is that certain updates can be a bit of an overkill depending on what neighborhood you live in. This is especially important if you might be planning on selling your home within a couple of years of doing this renovation. If you do too much, you might not get your money?s worth out of it.

A home improvement task does not have to be long and complicated. In fact often quick and easy jobs can improve things a drastic amount. Changing light bulbs, door knobs, or even replacing furniture knobs can greatly improve the look of a room. These simple jobs will make home improvement easy and rewarding.

Completing home improvement projects is a wonderful way to improve your home?s value and increase the energy efficiency of it as well. In this article we have discussed some of the top home improvement projects that you should start tackling today. We have also included some helpful tips to assist you in doing so. Get started today, and you?re sure to see the benefits soon.
