Euro Heads Higher in Forex Trading | Oakshire Financial

Currency market news

Euro is heading higher in forex trading on the currency market today, gaining as expectations of some sort of plan from the ECB boost some level of optimism.

The news that Mario Draghi is skipping the Jackson Hole summit later this week isn?t hurting the euro. Indeed, some are hoping that he will be hard at work, meeting with eurozone leaders to come to a solution.

For now, the euro is seeing some strength. The upside, however, is likely to be limited. Until some details are agreed to, and until a plan is released, there is still some uncertainty surrounding what, exactly, will be done ? and whether it will be enough to save the eurozone.?

S.Africa police killed miners 'in cold blood': photographer

South African special police shot dead strikers at the Lonmin mine "in cold blood", a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer alleged Thursday after he spent 15 days probing the violence that killed 44.

"Heavily armed police hunted down and killed the miners in cold blood," wrote South African photographer Greg Marinovich on the Daily Maverick news website.

Marinovich spent more than two weeks at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana, interviewing witnesses and taking photos after police opened fire on striking workers on August 16.

Officers shot dead 34 and injured 78 after a stand-off between rival unions had already killed 10, including two police officers.

Television cameras screened a mass shooting, which police afterwards justified as self-defence.

But most of the dead were shot away from the cameras, said Marinovich.

"A minority were killed in the filmed event... The rest was murder on a massive scale."

His photographs showed the letter "N" painted by police forensic experts on a rock crevice 300 metres (328 yards) behind the hill where the shooting was filmed.

The letter, the 14th of the alphabet, indicates corpse number 14 in the forensic investigation.

"Approaching N from all possible angles, observing the local geography, it is clear that to shoot N, the shooter would have to be close," said Marinovich.

An eyewitness had also told the photographer that armoured police trucks had driven over some strikers, Marinovich wrote.

President Jacob Zuma last week appointed a judicial commission of inquiry into the events on the day.

Police watchdog spokesman Moses Dlamini declined to comment on the Thursday report.

"I can't comment until I've read the article and spoken to investigators," he told AFP.

The Star newspaper on Monday reported that most of the dead were shot in the back while fleeing.

Marinovich won the Pulitzer Prize in 1991 for his coverage of violence in South Africa's townships at the end of apartheid.

His story as part of the "Bang Bang Club", four photographers who covered the conflicts, was told in a book and Hollywood film.

Baby Shower Decor Ideas (GDGC) - Stylish Stepmom | Stylish ...

My apologies on the delay of this posting! I?ve been having a great time with family celebrating the newest addition of the Austin family! (Who happens to be the ?arrival? we are/were celebrating with these baby shower decorating ideas).?

Keep these things in mind when planning a baby shower:?

-Budget. Don?t go over budget. You can get caught up, very easily, with Pinterest, Etsy, etc.?

-Talk to the Mother-to-Be. Find out what her likes and dislikes are, favorite foods (especially be aware of any particular food issues with pregnancy), gender of baby, etc.?

-Games. Not everyone enjoys playing games, so think of a simple, easy ?ice breaker? that can be played to get the guests mingling and talking to each other.?

Congratulations to Steven and Dani as they welcome their bundle of joy!?

Directcom Completes Arbon Fiber-to-the-Home Project ? Direct ...

August 29, 2012 by Brigham Griffin

This spring, Direct Communications engineers completed the upgrade of Arbon Valley from traditional copper telephone lines to Fiber-to-the-Home, enabling every resident in Arbon to receive broadband access.

The company?s fiber to the home rollout in Arbon began in the summer of 2009, and since then, Directcom crews have been working around the clock, laying fiber optic cable to all of the homes in the Arbon Valley. Even the very remote homes, from those miles up in the mountains to down the valley, can now receive better high-speed internet service than is available in most cities in the USA. The company began with Arbon because this exchange area had always been the most difficult to serve with traditional DSL over copper, and thus had the fewest broadband subscribers.

Direct Communications buried 158 miles of fiber optic cable in Arbon Valley, bringing fiber to about 90 homes.

Matt Farr, Engineer and Operations Manager stated: ?Arbon was a good starting point for us because it was so open, the construction was straightforward, and there weren?t a lot of other utilities to worry about running into. Also, we had a lot of customers there in Arbon that simply could not receive any internet signal before, because the farms and homes were so spread out. Fiber was the solution. It?s been good to hear customers tell us things like: ?We tried streaming Netflix for the first time ever last night?that was pretty cool.??

There is no resistance in the fiber optic cable, unlike copper lines, so the signal can travel infinitely futher, because it?s light, not an electron flow. With fiber, Directcom can now serve more remote customers in rural areas like Arbon, who live many miles away from the central phone office with broadband products like ethernet, VOIP, video conferencing, home security systems, remote appliance management, and other IP-based apps, which will be vital to the future economies of rural areas. Fiber optics will open up whole new markets of people who previously were too far to pick up a DSL signal over copper.

Farr related that the residents of Arbon had been extremely cooperative during the construction, often helping out the crews, which had helped the project go smoothly.

?The farmers would let us park our equipment in their sheds or shops overnight so that things like the water trailer wouldn?t freeze; they would let us fill up with water from their pumps?the whole community was just really helpful.? He related that people were so excited to get internet service that they would go out of their way to help get the work completed quickly.

?Once, at the end of the season, we were stopped by a really bad snowstorm, and a resident from Garden Creek drove out in the snow to pick up our fiber splicer, and all his equipment, on her personal snowmobile, so that we could complete the fiber splicing at their home.

We had people working in some very remote areas in Arbon, and sometimes we would run out of gas. Ken Estep once came out when we were in trouble and gave us a full tank of gas from his farm tanks.

I also want to thank the County Road Crew for all their help?they were extremely responsive in issuing all the road permits and easements we needed, and were very easy to work with?we were able to coordinate our fiber and road construction schedules?we couldn?t have completed this project without them.?

Directcom used local Arbon electrician, Cody Evans, to help wire the homes internal communications lines so that they would be ready for a fiber ethernet connection, and also to connect the homes power to the fiber terminal battery backup. Unlike the old copper network terminal, the fiber electronics (called an Optical Network Terminal, or ONT) on the side of a home, needs a power supply, and that required new electrical wiring in most cases.

Lucas McHargue, Construction Supervisor, said he remembers those years working in Arbon consisting of long, sometimes lonely days, and each home they connected had a story to it. ?I remember times when the snow was so deep on people?s driveways that even the backhoe couldn?t go through it, and we would have to move forward bucket by bucket, as I cleared the snow away. We met a lot of interesting people out there, and a lot of different dogs?some friendly, some not so friendly. People would call into the main office after we left their home and say: ?Those guys deserve a raise,? which I agreed with.?

Besides the direct access to high-speed internet from Direct Communications, the fiber will benefit the community in many other ways. Directcom has connected fiber to two cell phone towers in the valley, which will increase coverage and data speeds for people using certain cell phones. Fiber in an area means better communications for everyone.

The Arbon area?s first telephone lines were laid by local farmers, who asked former Rockland Telephone Company owner, Joseph Lee May, to acquire the lines back in the 1950?s. He was able to connect the two exchange areas together using copper lines hung on poles. Arbon and Rockland are now connected by various buried fiber optic lines that run right over the mountains separating the valleys, and Arbon will become part of a route that transports a lot of data traffic around southeast Idaho for various major carriers.

When will the rest of Direct Communications customers be upgraded to fiber?

Farr explained: ?We have a 5-year plan to basically convert all of our exchange areas from Bear Lake to Rockland to 100% fiber to the home. Arbon is complete. We started on Rockland this year, and will be completely upgraded to fiber over the next 2 years there. Bear Lake is the biggest project and that will take longer, but we already have a few subdivisions there completely converted to fiber, including The Reserve and Cottle Communities in Fish Haven. This summer we also buried new duct to about 30 homes in Canyon Estates in Fish Haven, and we hope to complete splicing the fiber there by the end of this year.?

Fiber optic cable carries an all-digital signal, which is better suited to today?s digital communication devices. Also, there is no interference from electric lines or magnetic fields like you experience with copper, so the signal is clearer, which will result in a better conversation and data transmission. Even lighting strikes, which can be transmitted by copper cabling, is not transmitted by Fiber-optic cable.

Having fiber to a home is a great modern feature that can increase the functionality and value of a home. In fact, having Fiber to the Home could increase the value of a home by as much as $5,000, according to the Fiber-to-the-Home Council *.? Fiber could be a great economic leveler for rural residents.? The homes in Arbon now have the same advanced connectivity as the most high-tech building in any major financial district in the world.

EPISODE #4

ESTABLISHING DAILY DEVOTIONS FOR KIDS ? PART 1 (INTERVIEW)

SUMMARY OF TODAY?S PODCAST

A conversation with my 3 oldest children, Aaron, Melinda, and Madeline ? about the establishment of daily devotions for kids.

To clarify, when I say ?Daily devotions for kids? I don?t mean family devotions or devotions that parents do with their kids. I mean the establishment of your kids? own personal habit of daily time with the LORD. This is a vital area of parenting ? shepherding your child?s heart to love the LORD and truly want to spend time with Him daily. Over the years I have seen these 3 grow to love and pursue the LORD for themselves, and I wanted to ask them questions regarding how that happened, what the process was like, and what the LORD has done in their lives.

This is PART 1 of the interview ? part 2 to follow in Episode 5.

OUTLINE OF THE PODCAST

  • Introduction of the podcast and topic
  • Introduction of Aaron, Melinda, and Madeline Green.
  • Discussion of whether a child can truly come to faith in Christ at the age of 3 or 4 (as these 3 did).
  • The beginning years of Aaron, Melinda, and Madeline?s experiences with daily devotions for kids.
  • How and when the habit grew into a desire.
  • Things the LORD has shown them along the way.

What You Must Look At When Ever Acquiring A Car Loan | Free ...

?

A car-it is likely to be just about the most radical inventions out there, one which sped the culture of man in to the future that we all recognize these days. These days, it is rather hard to consider living without the convenience of the automobile transportation. Certainly, these days, having a car has become a complete necessity. Of course, while these things are a delight to have, and a very convenient one too, vehicles, common as they are, don?t come affordable. Only a few individuals realize the intricacies that come with an ownership of a car, and essentially, those similar numbers are overwhelmed by the expenses that come with it, and therefore the absence of an auto loan.

?

Admittedly, from the light of the excitement that comes along with purchasing a new car, many individuals hardly even think of the expenses of an automobile or where or not they can pay for it, much less consider a necessary auto loan. Usually these matters appear right after they?ve already gone to the dealership, have selected their cars, and are by then stressed to sign the paperwork to close off the deal. Nonetheless, there are several things to consider which can help one look at whether or not they are likely to get an auto loan, and by default, their own personal car,

?

Consideration #1: ?Budget

?

In these times, reality rules, so if the objective should be to obtain a car, wipe the concept of actually buying one first from your mind, and think about how you?ll be getting it. A car loan require a monthly payment, that could be given, so upon thinking about having the ability to afford the monthly payment loan, the cost to be spent must also include the gasoline for the car, the servicing, the required taxes, the registration charges and even the insurance policy. These are typically are the matters new buyers neglect and then pay for it later on.

?

Consideration #2: The Overall Payment

?

As soon as the individual has decided their price range and is ready for the auto loan, the next step to take into account is-no, not investing in a car just yet-the overall payment over time. The settlement is divided in months, and then the basic provisions for loans like these can ascertain how much can be paid in the beginning and the amount for the haul. Usually, if the preliminary pay is simpler today, chances are, the costs will become more substantial after a while. Yet, if the initial pay is a little heavier, the following payments will be simpler on the purse.

?

Consideration #3: Auto Loan Provisions

?

The provisions of the loan will also have a good effect to not only the entire settlement but the monthly payment too, especially in the light of their loan?s rates of interest and its period of payment. It is important to confer with a car loan calculator to determine how such altering statistics will impact your monthly payment, and of course, whether or not your month to month finances can go over those numbers along with your spending budget. This may conserve some distress and frustration later on.

The Pressures of Getting Fit and Healthy Can Do Harm than Good ...

This guest post graciously submitted by Krisca.

We can?t escape it and an do our best to avoid it, but the pressure to look good, stay fit, and ?just be healthy? can take its toll on our emotional and physical health. Women are especially vulnerable to caving in to the pressure to be fit because of unhealthy and unrealistic ideals portrayed in the media. For many women, being thin equates to being healthy ? and this is usually far from the truth. This type of thinking can lay the groundwork for a full-blown eating disorder, and while an estimated 8 millionAmericanshaveaneatingdisorder, others simply suffer from ?disordered eating?.

Here are some of the ways the pressure to get fit and healthy can do more harm than good:

Setting Unrealistic Expectations

The media and celebrities put a lot of emphasis on health and fitness, emphasizing that this is one of the critical elements of the ?good life?. While working out and staying in shape do offer many positive benefits, few people can transform their bodies to the point that they look like a celebrity or fitness model. Having unrealistic expectations about what the body will look like by adopting a fitness regimen or pushing yourself through grueling workouts can take its toll on your emotional well-being ? you?ll never be satisfied by what you see in the mirror.

Striving for an Unhealthy Ideal

The ideal body image or ideal weight for any given person can be very different from national standards, or even the standards of close friends and family members. When someone is striving for an unhealthy ideal, they often put the pressure on themselves ? and their bodies ? to keep pushing through hours of workouts, adopting unhealthy dieting practices, or even resorting to diet pills and other dangerous weight loss methods. While it?s healthy to set goals and strive to improve oneself, working towards an unhealthy ideal version of the self can do more harm than good.

Living with a Distorted Body Image

Are you guilty of always feeling bad or having a low self-esteem because of the way you look? If you have a very strong inner dissatisfaction with your body and a poor body image, you may be more sensitive to the pressures of getting fit and healthy. You might feel like you will never be good enough unless you are fit and healthy, and that your body flaws are something to be ashamed about or hidden. Some people take things so far that they end up being diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Just like eating disorders, both men and women can suffer from this illness. Their perception of what their body looks like is nowhere near reality and they often spend a lot of time, resources, and emotional energy trying to ?fix? something that doesn?t need to be fixed. Taking steps to accept the limitations of genetics and taking an honest, objective look at your body can help you overcome many of the effects of a distorted body image. Working with a counselor or eating disorder specialist can also help to improve your perception of yourself.

The challenge of a long distance Relationship

Many people are in conflict with their lives jointly and the demands of doing well in their chosen occupation. These folks have put in many years wanting to build both a solid romantic relationship and a career. Nonetheless, the two typically conflict with each other. In many circumstance the job requires relocation over long distances and for a long time period. This being the situation the partners need to try to balance career and their lover for each other. This is where the long-distance challenge starts. The word challenge has the significance of something that can fail, but no one thinks about that part of the equation.

For more facts on Long-distance relationships check out Self Help for Self Esteem

The concept of long distance and love produces a terrible dilemma. The old saying of ?absence makes the heart grow founder? applies, but the folks that these men and women find founder of will be the opposite genders in their perspective cities. Generally ?out of sight out of mind? could be the closes clich? to long-distance love. Consequently, if each people are not willing to encounter severe difficulty with the temptations from the separation trouble for their bond is probable. The pit falls most likely to destroy love is time, work, and accessibility of sexy attractive, available as well as willing singles which will overwhelm good motives and love.

How do people prepare for long distance separation? The first thing that is essential is committing to the commitment. All people have their ups and downs in a relationship and it is during the lower times is when folks stray as they feel unloved and unfulfilled within the romantic relationship. Those who know that these moment are a natural part of a lasting commitment and work through the difficulties without straying off path become better in their partnership. One of the most challenging aspects of long distances is that there isn?t any potential for touching, or holding each other during these lower times. As a result it is essential to use each and every technological method of communicating such as email, skype, as well as phone to maintain contact even when the feeling to do this isn?t there.

It is critical to maintain a sense of belonging to each other with obvious reminders. Every time a pair is together as well as work in the same region they enjoy life as a couple. When long distance separates a couple this kind of perceptions is gone. Thus, it is crucial to keep the others presence in the living and work area with such things as pictures, and mementos of a life with each other. Men and women around these types of couples subsequently view a couple, not just a single person who is accessible for a relationship. Co-workers and friends won?t normally see long distance lovers as a couple and it is up to the couple to make the individuals around them create that connection. The result of this effort will create support from good friends in the relationship.

They are the very fundamentals of the first steps in this process. Other considerations are generally relevant and have to be looked at, however these very first concepts make it clear what the demands will be going forward.

FOR KIDS: New Jurassic flier

Amazingly well-preserved fossil depicts a novel flying reptile from the age of dinosaurs

Web edition : 9:51 am

David Hone of the University of Bristol in England has made a career of studying pterosaurs ? flying reptiles from 100 million years ago or more. Several years back, while working in southern Germany, he visited the local Solnhofen Museum along with a lot of other pterosaur experts. As they peered into a glass museum case that held a sandy-colored, fossil-bearing rock, he recalls the scientists saying something like: ?How lovely, another Rhamphorhynchus.? The fossil was nice, but tiny ? and just one of some 120 or so specimens of this pterosaur from about 150 million years ago.

Except that it wasn?t.

Fierce fighting in Syria swells refugee exodus

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian troops forced rebels to abandon a battered Damascus suburb on Friday in the latest battle of an intensifying civil war that the U.N. refugee agency said had prompted more than 200,000 people to flee the country.

Hundreds of soldiers and dozens of tanks and armored vehicles pushed into the centre of Daraya after a small group of defenders withdrew, opposition activists said.

President Bashar al-Assad's forces had subjected the Sunni Muslim township to a three-day bombardment from artillery, tanks, mortars, rockets and helicopter gunships in which at least 70 people were killed, 21 of them on Friday they said.

"There are lots of bodies trapped in destroyed buildings and civilians are trying to flee towards Damascus," an activist in Daraya, who gave his name as Abu Kinan, told Reuters by phone.

"The rebels have mostly slipped away. The fear now is that the army will round up young men and summarily execute them, like it did in Mouadamiya," he said, referring to a nearby suburb where residents said troops killed at least 40 people in cold blood this week after storming in to hunt down rebels.

Opposition sources reported a similar killing spree by Assad's forces in the Qaboun district of Damascus, where they said at least 46 people were done to death.

Syrian authorities restrict media access, making it hard to verify accounts by both sides in the conflict.

More than 90 people were killed across Syria on Friday, including 22 civilians in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which said about 220 had been killed nationwide on Thursday.

The incessant violence has accelerated a refugee exodus, with more than 3,500 Syrians fleeing to Turkey in the past 24 hours in what Turkish officials said was one of the highest daily totals since a revolt against Assad erupted in March 2011.

"In Jordan, a record 2,200 people crossed the border overnight and were received at Zaatari camp in the north," Adrian Edwards, spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said in Geneva.

ALEPPO FIGHTING

Assad's forceful response to initially peaceful protests inspired by Arab uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere has spawned an armed rebellion and plunged Syria into a civil war that the United Nations says has cost more than 18,000 lives.

The military has been struggling to shore up Assad's grip on Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo, which had long stayed aloof from the conflict between a mostly Sunni opposition and a power structure dominated by minority Alawites.

Fighting erupted in Aleppo, Syria's biggest city, after rebels staged an offensive there and in Damascus, emboldened by a July 14 bomb attack that killed four of Assad's top aides.

Clashes raged on in Aleppo, where combat jets and helicopter gunships struck rebel-held districts overnight, residents said.

One school used as a base by rebels was bombed twice during the night. "The rebels stay in abandoned police stations and hospitals, but the army knows exactly where they are," said Abu Ahmed, a resident living nearby.

On a frontline in the southern Saif al-Dawla area, rebels destroyed an armored personnel carrier and the army fired tank shells and mortar bombs, but made no attempt to advance.

The body of a civilian named Mohammed Tabraji, 25, lay in the street. His friend Mohammed al-Arabi said they had been looking for a place to buy bread when a sniper shot Tabraji.

In Bustan al-Qasr, not far from the frontline, a 20-year-old student who gave his name as Abdelrahman said his family was too poor to leave the city and hated the idea of fleeing to Turkey.

"If you go as a refugee you won't get any respect," he said. For most people here, self-respect is the most important thing."

SAFE HAVEN

Nonetheless, Syrians in dire straits have been streaming into neighboring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Turkey alone now hosts more than 78,000 Syrian refugees, according to its Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate, a sharp rise on the 44,000 registered there at the end of July.

Ankara, saying it will not be able to accommodate more than 100,000 refugees, has suggested that the United Nations set up a safe haven inside Syria to staunch the outflow.

The chances of gaining a U.N. Security Council mandate for such a safe haven, which would require military protection, are close to zero, given the rejection by veto-wielding powers Russia and China of any outside intervention in Syria.

French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on France 24 television on Thursday that an "international coalition" of Western nations and allies could consider setting up a limited no-fly zone over part of Syria without such a mandate.

"The scenario mentioned by (U.S. Secretary of State) Hillary Clinton of a particular zone where there could be a banned area is something that needs to be studied," said Le Drian, the first senior French official to air the possibility of action by an "international coalition," rather than the United Nations.

On Tuesday, Russia warned the West against taking any unilateral action in Syria, after President Barack Obama threatened "enormous consequences" if Assad used Syria's chemical or biological weapons.

France chairs a meeting of U.N. Security Council foreign ministers in New York next week which it has said will focus on humanitarian solutions for Syrians caught up in the conflict.

Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said he had invited Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan to attend the conference, given the number of refugees and fears of the conflict spreading.

At least three people, including a Sunni Islamist commander, were killed on Friday in a fifth day of Sunni-Alawite fighting in Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli, where the bloodshed in Syria has aggravated old sectarian tensions.

A Lebanese security source said the Tripoli violence, in which 16 people have been killed this week, was "alarming and dangerous .. It is very likely that it will escalate this time".

With Business/Birther Quips, Romney Flip-Flops With Humor - New ...

A week or so back, fellow Voice?scribe James King argued that Vice President Joe Biden brings nothing to the Democratic ticket except awkward gaffes and constant smacks to the head by the DNC. This came off the news that Biden told a crowd of mostly African-American citizens that Romney's policies would "put y'all back in chains." Ouch.

But the thing about Biden is that he is a consistent gaffer; throughout his career in politics, he's been prone to mess up the names of states, the audience he's speaking to and other sensitive subjects. So, it comes as no surprise when we read a headline that includes 'Biden' and 'gaffe' in the same sentence; Obama chose him more so for his foreign policy knowledge, not for his keen knack for bad publicity.

That's what separates him from Romney's unintentional statements. With Mitt, his gaffes show us a flare of Mitt that is both cruel and contrary to past statements. By now, the entire country has pretty much accepted the fact that he has flip-flopped on every policy notion argued in Congress since 1865. It's whatever; we get it, people change over time.?

But, in the past day or two, Romney has somehow ventured into a new area of flip-flopping that has been previously untouched by the Republican ticket: humor - something he has never been an expert on, except that time he told David Letterman that he was the generic guy in the photo that came with the picture frame. Whether it was unintentional or not, Romney rehashed criticisms he used himself just months ago for talking points; in one case, in the form of a joke.

Let the gaffes begin.

Flip:?In June, President Obama told reporters that "the private sector was doing fine." As a response, Restore Our Future, the SuperPAC henchman of the Romney tent, released this ad:

Flop: On Thursday night, in a dining room full of One Percent donors, Romney told his fellow profiteers that "Big Business was doing fine in many places." Why? Because they have tax havens to hide all their money and enjoy the real luxuries of life in the meantime. No, seriously. And the sad thing is... he's right.

Flip:?He has associated himself with birther-in-chief Donald Trump for fund-raising purposes. He apologized for his son saying that his dad would release his tax returns once Obama "released his grades and birth certificate." And he has told reporters that he believes the President was born in the United States. Romney has steered clear of a controversy that has taken over the paranoid fringe of the Right. Until...

Flop:?Yesterday, Romney greeted an audience of 7,000 supporters in his hometown in Michigan. And he cracked a joke that everyone just loved:

"I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born... No one has ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised."

Mitt has a point: no one has asked him for his birth documents (just the past five years' worth of tax returns). Although the audience responded with some good laughter, the Obama tent was not so pleased, culminating in what could be the perfect tweet response to something like this: After the uproar, Romney giggled to reporters:

?'No, no, not a swipe. I've said throughout the campaign, and before, there's no question about where he was born. He was born in the United States. This was fun about us, and coming home, and humor, you know...'

LOL. Of course.

FILE - In this July 24, 2005, file photo, Lance Armstrong holds the winner's trophy after claiming his seventh straight Tour de France cycling race during ceremonies on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris after the 21st and final stage of the race between Corbeil-Essonnes, south of Paris, and the French capital. U.S. Anti-Doping Agency chief executive Travis Tygart said Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012, that the agency will ban Armstrong from cycling for life and strip him of his seven Tour de France titles for doping. Armstrong on Thursday night dropped any further challenges to USADA's allegations that he took performance-enhancing drugs to win cycling's premier event from 1999-2005. (AP Photo/Bernard Papon, Pool, File)

(AP) ? Alberto Contador declined to comment on the possibility of Lance Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles, and instead paid tribute Friday to his former teammate's skill on the bike.

Armstrong said he won't pursue arbitration in the case brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which says his Tour titles will be stripped and he will be banned for life for doping.

Contador, who hesitantly partnered Armstrong during the first year of the American's comeback in 2009 with Astana, said he had kept his distance from the case.

"I'm not up to date on the case. Whenever I'm competing at a major race I try to keep these things to the margin and stay completely focused on the race," Contador said Friday before the start of the seventh stage of the Spanish Vuelta. "I don't know if it's over or not. The truth is I'm not thinking about it."

Contador and Armstrong were bitter teammates during the seven-time Tour champion's return to cycling after a three-year hiatus, with Contador eventually emerging as the team No. 1 on his way to winning the Tour that season. Armstrong, who came third, moved to Radioshack the next season.

Still, the Spanish cyclist, who was stripped of his 2010 Tour victory because of drug charges, was polite in describing the 40-year-old Armstrong's abilities on the bike after having once described their relationship as "zero."

"I think he was a cyclist who always showed such strength, great intelligence and spectacular physical conditioning," said Contador, who is third overall at the Vuelta.

Few cyclists wanted to comment on Armstrong's dilemma before the start of Friday's Vuelta leg, with 2002 Tour runner-up Joseba Beloki refusing to say anything despite the possibility of winning the title if Armstrong is formally stripped.

"We read the cycling news and commented about it on the team bus, but nothing more than that," Dutch cyclist Joost van Leijen of Lotto Belisol said. "I understand his decision. The chasers will never stop and he has a life after this."

More easing seen as China factory survey disappoints

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China's manufacturing sector contracted at its sharpest pace in nine months in August, according to a survey showing falling export orders and rising inventories, a signal that more policy stimulus may be needed to engineer a second half pick-up in growth.

As calls grew louder from analysts and investors for further measures from Beijing to support the economy, China's central bank on Thursday completed its largest weekly injection of funds into the financial system in seven months - a move traders saw as a substitute for a cut in banks' required reserve ratio.

The HSBC Flash China manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI) - a preliminary read-out that provides an early peek at data for August - fell to 47.8 this month, its lowest level since November and well down from July's final figure of 49.3.

"Inventory numbers are the highest on record. Orders to inventory are the lowest since December 2008. Foreign orders to inventory are the lowest since January 2009. It's very hard to put a positive spin on anything within the data," said Robert Rennie, chief currency strategist at Westpac Bank In Sydney.

"Bottom line - a very poor update with some very poor China data to come."

Falling demand from debt-ridden Europe, China's single biggest export market, has put the Chinese economy under pressure, with the ripples now being felt throughout east Asia.

Japan said on Wednesday that exports slumped the most in six months in July as shipments to Europe and China tumbled. Exports from Taiwan, a key part of the global technology supply chain, fell for a fifth straight month in July and South Korea, home to major carmakers, computer chip and flat-screen producers, recorded its sharpest export fall in July in nearly three years.

Sixth consecutive quarters of slowing Chinese growth have also taken a toll on commodities markets, with falling prices and an uncertain outlook prompting miner BHP Billiton to shelve a $20 billion expansion project in Australia.

The Australian dollar wobbled after the latest data from the country's single biggest export market, while Australia's resources minister on Thursday declared that "the resources boom is over.

MORE EASING SEEN

The HSBC PMI has been below the 50 mark that divides expansion from contraction for 10 straight months, and the index is now at levels rarely seen since the 2008-2009 global financial crisis.

But China is loath to unleash a massive stimulus package as it did in 2008. Instead, it has chosen to open more sectors to private capital to help fund new investment projects.

"To achieve the stated policy goal of stabilizing growth and the jobs market, Beijing must step up policy easing to lift infrastructure investment in the coming months," Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC in Hong Kong said in a statement accompanying the index.

China has been "fine tuning" policies to keep growth on track without releasing curbs on the property sector.

Beijing has fast-tracked fiscal spending on key projects, cut the amount of cash banks must keep as reserves (RRR) to free an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan for lending ($190 billion) and, in the space of four weeks in June and July, twice lowered benchmark lending rates.

Traders and analysts had widely expected that another RRR cut was imminent, and many analysts still believe a cut is needed to give banks the liquidity they need to boost lending.

"I would cut RRR tomorrow," Ting Lu, economist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, told Reuters.

Instead, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) appears to be using an alternative policy tool, injecting a net 278 billion yuan ($43.77 billion) into the interbank money market this week, the largest net injection since early January.

The PBOC's decision to inject the funds through open market operations, rather than through a cut in bank reserves, indicates its concern about stoking inflation.

House prices have now risen for two straight months on a monthly basis, following eight consecutive monthly declines resulting from Beijing's campaign to bring prices down.

Employing open market operations offered the central bank more flexibility and precision, said Ma Yun, an economist at CEBM, a Chinese macro-economic consultancy, because the effect was temporary and could be targeted at specific banks in need of liquidity. By contrast, an RRR cut affects all banks and is effectively permanent unless the central bank moves actively to reverse it, so can have an inflationary affect.

Evidence has been mounting in recent weeks that China's economy is struggling to overcome strong global headwinds, with economists' expectations of a second half pick-up being pushed steadily further back.

Chinese government data last month showed July exports rose just 1 percent from a year earlier and that new loans were at a 10-month low. Factory output rose at its lowest pace in three years and pricing power faded.

That raised the specter of a seventh straight quarter of slowing growth in July-September, after the second-quarter expanded 7.6 percent from a year earlier, only just above Beijing's official 7.5 percent target.

The prospect of unemployed workers taking to the streets is a top worry for China's ruling Communist Party, particularly ahead of a once-in-a-decade leadership transition this autumn.

However, unemployment levels have not yet come close to those of the winter of 2008-2009. At least 20 million jobs were lost in export-oriented coastal provinces when global trade ground to a halt then. Some estimates put the total as high as 40 million.

Plainfield Police Request Gun Safes, Rifles at Schools | NBC Chicago

Getty Images

Plainfield Police requested the installation of safes containing a gun at high schools in the event of a shooter on campus.

Four high schools in south suburban Plainfield could get some firepower for added protection if the police department has its way.

Plainfield Police asked the district to install locked gun safes to keep a rifle and important information at several schools in the event there's a shooter on campus, according to Plainfield School District 202.

The safe could include a ?long gun, such as an AR 15 rifle," according to the request, and would be stored in the offices of school police officers, who would be the only ones with access.

The request was made for Plainfield Central Campus, Plainfield East, Plainfield North and Plainfield Academy. Plainfield South High School will not be included.

?Unfortunately, in today?s society active shooter incidents are no longer something we see on TV,"?Police Chief John Konopek said in a statement. "They are reality.?

Plainfield hasn't experienced a campus shooting, and Konopek said he wants to keep it that way.

?We have found, through our training, officers are much better equipped to handle this type of incident utilizing a long gun ? rather than a handgun,? he said.

The school board has not yet voted on the request. A committee is set to review it Sept. 19.

Why Federal Court Ruled Gene Patents Legal | RealClearScience

An ongoing legal battle regarding gene patents began in 2009 when the ACLU representing numerous clients sued Myriad Genetics and the USPTO. The dispute is over patents on two genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, discovered in the 1990s which have a correlation to increased rates of breast and ovarian cancer.
