China and Taiwan have completed works on the first two undersea telecoms cables which are set to be operational from August 21, reports AFP citing an official from Taiwan?s largest telecoms company Chunghwa Telecom.
The two fibre optic cables join the city of Xiamen on the Chinese mainland with the Taiwanese-controlled Kinmen island group. The Chunghwa Telecom official said the operator has invested $3 million in the joint venture which involves the three main Chinese operators. Kinmen or Jinmen is only 2 kilometres from the Chinese coast.
Taiwan was not taken over by the Chinese Communist Party after the revolution in 1949, though few countries recognise it as an independent state. Ties between Taiwan and mainland China have warmed after Ma Ying-jeou administration came into power in Taiwan in 2008. GTB
